Dirty BBQ and home cleaning mixture to help remove the grim

Its looks like its shaping up to be another great weekend! I”m one for cautious optimism but Met Eireann is forecasting “a good deal of dry weather, and with some good sunny spells developing” and I think it’s time to finally break out the BBQ. I haven’t lifted … the lid on my ‘barbie’ since summer 2007! Shocking I know but somehow sunshine and weekends just didn’t seem to coincide last year. It”s a cleaning job I”ve been putting on the long finger.

Cleaning a BBQ is a nasty job, and after two summers of neglect my grill is not a pretty site. I’ve been given an eco cleaning tip to tackle this job, using baking soda (bicarbonate of soda, also called bread soda) and vinegar.

To clean the grills you put them in a plastic bin liner. In a large bowl put one cup of baking soda and slowly add one cup of white vinegar. The mixture will really foam and bubble, so make sure to use a bowl large enough to allow for this. Wearing gloves pour this mixture onto the grills in the bag and close the bag and leave overnight. The next day the dirty will have turned into gunk and hopefully will wash off easily with water.

Now all that”s left is choosing what to cook and decide what to have – Angus BBQ Steak with BBQ’d Banana Flambe in Kaluha Topped with Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert?

Happy eating!

And before you get started, be sure to turn off the gas supply at the source or disconnect the propane tank. You should also check your BBQ manual to see if there are any specific cleaning instructions for your particular model.

    Best regards!

Always consider the weather forecast. Rain will cause the ladder and roof to be slippery and hazardous. Heat will make surfaces hot, and the sun burning hot might warrant some sunscreen. These are simple considerations, but necessary ones.

Alternatively, you can use some soda crystals and elbow grease.
