Scabiosas: Fabulous Summer Flowering

Scabiosas: Fabulous Summer Flowering When it comes to trouble free and endless summer flowering, it will be very hard to match the stunning beauty and consistent reliability in various shades of the Scabiosa. Scabiosa’s, more commonly known as the ‘pincushion flower’ are delightful herbaceous perennials that produce beautiful frilly flowers with pincushion like centres on wiry stems and come in a wide range of colours, each with a very distinctive but eye-catching flower.

Scabiosas form neat, compact and reliable plants, blooming from early June to late October. Although sometimes considered to be very hardy plants, young plants may require some protection from slug damage. Scabious do best in temperate conditions and prefer a sunny or partial shade site and moderately fertile free draining soil conditions. Any faded or dead headed flowers should be removed and / or cut back in order to extend flowering period.

Scabious flowers are nectar rich and are quite attractive to bees and butterflies. Scabious  are terrific for mass planting and are ideal for inclusion anywhere in a range of gardens from cottage garden borders to formal planting schemes, raised beds,  planters and especially in mixed containers.

Top varieties include Scabiosa Pink Mist, Scabiosa Butterfly Blue, Scabiosa Perfecta and Scabiosa Chile Black and are available in most garden centers.
