Sinn Féin calls for backing of bill to abolish household charge

Sinn Féin is encouraging all TDs to support its bill to abolish the controversial household charge.

A debate on the Private Members’ Bill will begin tonight before being followed up with a vote tomorrow.

Speaking on the matter, the party’s environment spokesman Brian Stanley said that if the bill was passed the charge would be abolished with refunds for those who have already paid the €100 fee.

Mr Stanley said the €160 million that the charge hoped to raise could be replaced by other means, such as a higher income tax for high earners and a cap on public service wages of €100,000.

The bill has already received the backing of Jimmy Kelly of Unite, John Douglas of Mandate and Louis Bayliss of single parents’ group SPARK.
