Tánaiste denies clash over possible implementation of property tax

Eamon Gilmore

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has denied claims that there has been a clash amongst the coalition parties in government over how to impose the forthcoming property tax.

At the weekend Labour Party chairman Colm Keaveney said that the new tax could be deducted at source from PAYE workers’ wages to avoid a boycott similar to the one which greeted the introduction of the €100 household charge this year.

However, that has been rejected by Labour leader Gilmore, who said it was far too soon to start speculating on the issue.

The Labour leader tried to play down suggestions of any rift with Mr Keaveney, saying: “The chairman of the Labour Party has been expressing his wish that when the property tax is imposed it should be fair and equitable, and that is very much the view of the Labour Party.”
