Rabbitte rules out TV licence fee increase

Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte has ruled out any increase in the €160-a-year TV licence fee.

RTÉ director general Noel Curran told The Irish Times last Friday that he would like to see the State broadcaster collect a greater proportion of its funding form public sources as it looks to break even by the year end.

However, this has been quashed by Mr Rabbitte, who said: “I don’t have any intention of raising the TV licence at this stage.”

He did tell Newstalk though that he hoped to raise further revenue by converting the TV licence fee to a “broadcasting charge”, which would take into account people who received communications via laptops, smartphones and tablets rather than televisions.
