If you have just completed your leaving cert, September may seem way off in the distance to you and all you want to do right now is sit back, relax and enjoy the summer sun. However if you are starting college this September and are moving away from home you should starting thinking and more importantly start looking for a place … to live…now!
Yes it’s barely July but it’s never too early to start looking for accommodation. It is true to say that there is a wide variety of accommodation to choose from nowadays, i.e. onsite college accommodation, house share and lodgings or more commonly known as ‘Digs’, but remember first come is first served. Don”t wait until the end of August to look for accommodation as more than likely there will be very little choice left!
So where should you start looking? The place you should probably start your search is with the Accommodation Office of the college you will (/ hope) to attend. They usually will provide you with a list of onsite college accommodation first but are also good at providing lists of ‘Digs’ in the local and are overall fairly helpful at pointing you in the right direction.
You can also take a look in local newspapers and search online. Last but not least if you know anyone who has either attended or is attending the college you are going to, ask them where they think the best places to live are.
Over the next few weeks we will post a series of blogs to help you with your college accommodation search and your move away from home. Will let you know the about best and worst to watch out for when sharing accommodation, how to resolve conflicts, how to pay the bills – the list is endless.
